PAT Testing FAQs

What is PAT testing?

Portable Appliance Testing, commonly called PAT testing, involves checking electrical equipment for signs of damage and carrying out appropriate electrical safety tests. It helps identify faults that could create a risk of electric shock or fire.

What does ITEE mean?

ITEE stands for Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. It describes the work more accurately because electrical safety checks can cover more than portable appliances. PAT testing remains the familiar name many customers use for this service.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

For workplaces, the law requires electrical equipment to be maintained to prevent danger. It does not prescribe a compulsory annual PAT test for every item. Inspection and testing can form part of a suitable maintenance programme, depending on the equipment and the risks involved.

How often should equipment be inspected and tested?

There is no single interval suitable for every appliance. Frequency depends on the equipment, its use, its surroundings and previous findings. Equipment that is frequently moved or exposed to damage may need checking more often than equipment kept in a low-risk office.

What equipment can be checked?

Common examples include:

  • Computers, monitors, printers and mains-powered chargers.

  • Kettles, toasters and microwaves.

  • Vacuum cleaners and other cleaning equipment.

  • Portable heaters and fans.

  • Extension leads and detachable power cables.

  • Power tools and larger plug-connected appliances.

Please mention any specialist or hardwired equipment when requesting a quote so its suitability can be confirmed.

What happens during an inspection and test?

The process starts with a visual inspection of the equipment, plug and cable. This can identify damage, loose connections, overheating and other visible concerns. Appropriate electrical tests are then selected for the equipment. These may include checks of protective earthing, insulation or leakage current. Every item does not require the same tests.

Do new appliances need PAT testing?

New equipment should normally arrive in a safe condition and does not usually need formal testing before first use. A visual check for damage is recommended. A workplace, venue or insurer may have additional requirements, so check any relevant policy.

Will equipment need to be unplugged?

Usually, yes. Access to the plug and equipment is needed to complete the checks. Computers and other sensitive equipment should be shut down correctly beforehand. Please highlight anything that must remain running so arrangements can be discussed before the visit.

How should I prepare for the appointment?

Make the equipment and its plugs accessible, and gather loose chargers, extension leads and detachable cables. Let us know about restricted access, equipment in use, or items that are difficult to disconnect. For rented premises, arrange access with the occupier beforehand.

What happens if an item fails?

You will be told which item has failed and why. Equipment identified as unsafe should be taken out of use until it has been repaired and confirmed safe, or replaced. A failed inspection or test does not automatically mean the appliance must be thrown away.

Does a pass guarantee an appliance will remain safe?

A pass reflects its condition and the checks completed at the time. Equipment can develop faults or become damaged afterwards. Continue checking for damaged cables, cracked plugs, scorch marks or other warning signs, and stop using equipment if a concern arises.

Is PAT testing the same as an EICR?

No. PAT testing concerns electrical equipment and its associated leads. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) assesses the building’s fixed electrical installation, such as wiring, sockets and consumer units. The two services cover different things.

Will PAT testing check whether my appliance works properly?

The main purpose is electrical safety. It is not a full assessment of performance, reliability or every possible fault. For example, electrical safety testing does not establish whether a washing machine cleans effectively or a printer produces good-quality prints.

How much does PAT testing cost?

The quote depends on the number and type of items, your location and any access requirements. For an accurate quote, provide your postcode, an approximate item count and a brief description of the premises and equipment.

Do you work weekends?

Yes, this can be arranged.
